A clinical Kylian Mbappe secured a hat-trick, propelling Paris Saint-Germain to a 3-0 victory over high-flying Reims on Saturday and positioning them at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Despite Mbappe’s stellar performance, coach Luis Enrique expressed dissatisfaction with the France captain’s display.
Mbappe initiated the scoring in the third minute in the Champagne region and followed up with two more goals in the second half, securing a decisive win for PSG. This triumph propelled the reigning champions to the league summit, one point ahead of Nice, who had drawn against Montpellier on Friday.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, PSG’s goalkeeper, played a crucial role in preserving the lead by making a series of outstanding saves, thwarting Reims’ attempts to stage a comeback. This victory served as a rebound for Luis Enrique’s team following their midweek Champions League loss to AC Milan.
Mbappe’s outstanding performance extends beyond domestic competition, as he currently leads Ligue 1 in scoring with 13 goals in 11 appearances this season. Additionally, the France captain has found the net twice in European competitions.
However, the coach expressed some reservations about his star player’s performance. “While we acknowledge Kylian Mbappe’s value, there’s room for improvement. I expect more from him,” the Spaniard remarked. “Undoubtedly one of the world’s finest players, he still has significant potential for growth, and I don’t want him to become complacent.”
Mbappe himself conveyed a sense of dissatisfaction with his performance during an interview with Amazon Prime earlier.
“In all humility, I don’t necessarily have to be in top form to find the net, but my goal is to both score goals and contribute to the team’s overall performance. I always aim to assist the team to the best of my abilities,” Mbappe expressed.
Addressing the setback in Milan, Mbappe commented, “It’s a different competition, and our primary focus was on securing a victory. Despite Nice drawing, we aimed to claim the top spot, and we’ve accomplished that. We are satisfied with the outcome. While we will reflect on the Champions League in due time, it’s essential to recognize that Ligue 1 demands a distinct mindset and style of play.”
The recent 2-1 defeat in Milan had placed PSG’s Champions League prospects in a precarious position with two group games remaining. However, domestically, they seem to have finally found their rhythm after a hesitant start to the season.
