May D has revealed that he couldn’t sleep in the room P-Square provided for him when he was signed to the duo’s record label.

Afropop singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, better known as May D, has opened up about his experience with his former record label, Square Records, which was owned by the P-Square duo, Peter and Paul Okoye.

May D signed with Square Records in 2011, but his tenure with the label was brief, as he was dropped in August 2012—a decision he believes set back his music career.

In the latest episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, released on January 13, May D reflected on his time with P-Square. He shared a story about how singer Davido, during a visit to him at P-Square’s house, was unable to sleep in his room due to the poor living conditions. “When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room in P-Square’s house, and he said, ‘May D, is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here oh. If I had a room, it would have been cooler,’” May D recalled.

The singer also revealed that during his time with Square Records, he didn’t even have a bank account. “It’s only when someone has money that he opens an account,” he said.

May D further reflected on his early career, claiming that at one point, he was more popular than both Wizkid and Davido. “Then it was Wizkid, Davido, and I. I was even bigger. What’s ‘Holla at Your Boy’ compared to ‘Soundtrack’?” he stated.

Looking back, the 40-year-old artist believes that his split from Square Records marked a crucial turning point in his career.
