Luis Manuel Díaz Jimenez, the father of Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, has been successfully liberated after enduring a 12-day abduction by ELN guerrillas in Colombia. On Thursday, Colombian reports confirmed that the 58-year-old has been securely placed under the care of a United Nations (UN) committee.
This remarkable turn of events transpired following an agreement that involved a commission representing the UN and the Catholic Church, which collaborated with the ELN to facilitate the release. Aerial footage depicted helicopters hovering over the border region straddling La Guajira and Cesar, serving as the location where the kidnappers would hand over Luis Jimenez.
At the Valledupar airport, the helicopter was on standby, as it was decided that the ELN would transfer the hostage to the committee in the midst of the Serranía del Perijá. Only humanitarian workers and the helicopter’s crew were permitted on board, and they are currently en route to transport Diaz’s father to a hospital for a thorough medical evaluation, given the ordeal he has endured.
Contrary to previous statements made by the Colombian government on Wednesday, it was today that Luis Jimenez was ultimately released, even though preparations for the operation had commenced earlier.
