The Labour Party (LP) has expressed strong disapproval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Year speech, condemning it as lacking substance. The party asserts that the speech exposes the All Progressives Congress (APC) as being guided by a high level of hypocrisy, deceit, and a notable absence of empathy.
According to the LP, the speech failed to address the pressing issues faced by Nigerians, particularly the Christmas Eve massacre in Plateau State where over 200 people lost their lives to terrorists. The party finds it distressing that the President and his team neglected to offer words of comfort to the affected families.
Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of LP, emphasized the President’s apparent helplessness in confronting critical challenges such as insecurity, crumbling infrastructure, a decline in manufacturing and productivity, inflation, and the escalating exchange rate of the naira to the dollar. The party also raised concerns about the alleged widespread looting of the nation’s resources by appointed officials and party leaders, which the President failed to address.
The LP strongly criticized the President’s claim that every decision and action taken during his term has been in the best interest of the country. The party specifically questioned the President’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy without a clear plan to alleviate the resultant hardships on Nigerians. Furthermore, they criticized the utilization of the nation’s foreign reserves for attending the climate change summit in Dubai, seeing little benefit for the citizens.
The party also voiced apprehension about the damage inflicted on democratic institutions, such as the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), under the APC administration. While calling for prayers for the nation, the LP urged the National Assembly to prioritize constitutional principles over party affiliations in safeguarding the democratic framework.
