Tragedy struck in Lagos State as Pastor and Magistrate Olasanmi Ogunkanmi, 58, suddenly slumped and passed away on the night of January 1, 2025, just hours after returning from a three-week holy pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Israel.
Magistrate Ogunkanmi, who served at the Ikeja Magistrate Court, had embarked on the spiritual journey as part of the first batch of Lagos pilgrims. Described by colleagues as a “gentle, humble, and amiable fellow,” he was said to have performed his duties with excellence and integrity throughout his career.
A colleague at the Ikeja Magistrate Court shared, “Adegbite (Ogunkanmi) was filled with excitement and satisfaction upon his return on January 1, 2025. Sadly, God called him home that same night.”
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with conflicting reports suggesting that he either slumped at home or passed away peacefully in his sleep.
On January 17, 2025, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Bishop Stephen Adegbite, visited the late magistrate’s family at their residence in Ikorodu, Lagos, to offer condolences. Addressing the widow, Bishop Adegbite expressed heartfelt sympathy and urged her to find solace in faith, describing the death as “providential.”
“It was not an accident that Magistrate Ogunkanmi passed away the same night he returned from a holy pilgrimage,” Adegbite said. “Your husband lived a well-fulfilled life on earth. It is not about how long one lives but how well.”
The Lagos judiciary mourns the loss of a dedicated servant of the law, as family, friends, and colleagues remember a life marked by faith, service, and humility. May his soul rest in peace.
