The Organised Labour has rejected a fresh minimum wage proposal put forth by the Nigerian Government.
According to reports from Channels Television, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) collectively turned down the Federal Government’s offer to set the new minimum wage at N60,000.
Furthermore, it was revealed that labour had adjusted its position from the initial proposal of N497,000 to N494,000.
A prominent member of the Tripartite Committee negotiating a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers revealed to Channels Television that the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector proposed a N60,000 monthly minimum wage. This offer came after they had tabled N57,000 during the previous week’s negotiations.
It’s worth noting that the government had initially proposed N48,000 and N54,000, both of which were rejected by Organised Labour.
On the other hand, Labour had initially proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage. However, they later revised their demand to N497,000 last week and then further adjusted it to N494,000 on Tuesday.
As of now, the Tripartite Committee has yet to reach an agreement on the new minimum wage, with only three days remaining until the May 31 deadline set by the labour unions for the government.
