Kwara State University Workers to Receive New Minimum Wage Starting December 2024

Employees of the state-owned Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, are set to benefit from the newly approved minimum wage of ₦70,000, effective December 2024.

The Chairman of KWASU’s Governing Council, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, announced the development during a meeting with executives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibadan Zone, at the institution’s Business School in Ilorin. He noted that the decision aims to foster industrial harmony and enhance staff commitment to the university’s vision.

Highlighting KWASU’s dedication to staff welfare, Professor Ambali outlined additional measures in place, including:

  • A consequential salary adjustment.
  • A ₦100,000 school fees rebate for staff children enrolled at KWASU.
  • A ₦50,000 monthly stipend for staff with disabilities.
  • A subsidized transportation scheme to ease movement between Ilorin and Malete.

He added that the university council is actively engaging the state government to address concerns raised by ASUU, including the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) to union members.

Professor Ambali commended ASUU’s leadership for adopting non-combative approaches to resolving issues and acknowledged the union’s role in advocating for the establishment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), a major source of infrastructure and training support for Nigerian institutions.

In his remarks, Comrade Oyegoke Oyebamiji, Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Ibadan Zone, emphasized the need for increased university funding to ensure institutions meet societal demands effectively. He appealed to the Kwara State Government to reinstate subventions for KWASU and fulfill its obligation to pay EAA to staff.

Comrade Oyebamiji also lauded the quality of administration and the harmonious relationship between staff and management at KWASU, which he said has prevented industrial actions at the institution.
