The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, has called on the organizers of the planned October 1st protest to reconsider their stance and allow more time for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to address Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.
This appeal was conveyed through a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Anya, shortly after the organizers met with the state police command.
According to the statement, the Commissioner urged the protest group to exercise patience, emphasizing the importance of giving the Federal Government a chance to resolve the nation’s economic issues and related demands.
The statement reads in part:
“Regarding the planned Nationwide Protest for October 1st, the Kogi State Police Command, led by CP Bethrand Onuoha, held a meeting today, 28th September 2024, with the Executive of the ‘TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT’ Kogi State Chapter at the Command Headquarters in Lokoja.
The CP advised the group to reconsider their planned protest and give the government more time to address the country’s economic challenges.
He acknowledged the group’s legal right to peaceful protest under the law but cautioned against the possibility of hoodlums hijacking the demonstration, which could lead to violence, property damage, and harm to critical national infrastructure, negatively impacting the economy.”
The group’s leader expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for the dialogue and promised to discuss the police’s concerns with their members before making a final decision on their participation in the protest. The group also reaffirmed their commitment to peace, progress, and development in Kogi State.
Attendees of the meeting included senior police officials such as DCP Chike Louis Nwabuwa, ACP Aigbe Aghahowa, SP William Ovye Aya, and others. Representatives of the protest group included Mose Opeyemi, Oloruntoba Segun, Muhammed Abdul, and several other key members.
