Jega Clarifies Remarks Regarding Election Compromise in the 2023 Polls

Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has responded to reports suggesting that he claimed the 2023 elections were compromised. These reports alleged that Jega made these remarks during a two-day retreat organized by the Senate in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

The purported statement attributed to Jega was as follows: “We have seen, in the 2023 elections, the damaging effect of how people in the corridors of power get their client/partisan nominees appointed, without being thoroughly screened, and then they are influenced to compromise the integrity of elections.”

In response, Jega has clarified that the report does not accurately represent his stance. A brief statement from his Senior Research Assistant, Princess Hamman-Obels, stated, in part: “The attention of Prof. Attahiru Jega has been drawn to a misleading report published in several online newspapers, quoting him as having commented that the 2023 elections were compromised. The report circulating is incorrect and does not faithfully reflect the presenter’s position. Professor Jega categorically denies making this particular comment about the 2023 polls.”
