Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto suggested on Saturday that Nigerian youths should consider migrating abroad, emphasizing that the country is vast enough for such choices. However, he added that those who do so may later realize the significance of their contributions to Nigeria.
Addressing Veritas University graduands during their convocation ceremony, Kukah advocated for creating a conducive environment so that those who stay behind can competently engage with their international counterparts.
In his words, Kukah stated, “I encourage young people who wish to leave Nigeria to feel free to do so. The country is expansive. We can assure you that upon settling in the United States of America or any other destination, you will come to recognize that Nigeria requires your skills.”
He expressed hope that those who remain in Nigeria will have the opportunity to compete on a global scale, asserting, “We possess all the necessary resources to make a positive transformation.”
This advice aligns with recent calls by Daniel Bwala, a media aide to the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Bwala urged the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to address the root causes of Nigerians migrating abroad, attributing this trend to issues such as inadequate salaries and poor working conditions across various professions.
