Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has explained his decision to create the song “Don’t Shoot” in collaboration with his colleagues Chuba Akpom and Medy Elito.
Iwobi revealed that his goal is to inspire young people to aim higher and resist the negative influences that often affect London’s youth.
In the 2023–2024 Premier League season, Iwobi made a significant impact at Fulham, scoring five goals and providing two assists. His contributions were crucial in helping the team finish 13th in the league and reach the semifinals of the Carabao Cup.
The former Arsenal player emphasized that the song’s lyrics are meant to encourage young people to set ambitious goals and avoid the harmful activities prevalent in London.
In an interview with the Evening Standard, Iwobi said, “Growing up in London, there’s a lot of criminal activity, things you don’t want to see or hear. With our influence, we’re trying to say don’t do that, channel it into something else. Whether it’s football or music, anything that keeps you on the right path is what we’re trying to promote.”
He added, “My friends thought the music was actually decent and suggested we release it. So, we decided to release it at the right time without getting distracted because football remains the main focus. But at the same time, I am more than just a footballer. I am human, like everyone else.”
