Israel PM Says No Peace Until Hamas Destroyed

Relentless Israeli airstrikes have caused extensive damage to the Palestinian territory, escalating tensions in the Middle East and prompting global calls for a ceasefire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that lasting peace in Gaza can only be achieved by destroying Hamas, demilitarizing the territory, and deradicalizing Palestinian society. The World Health Organization has reported distressing accounts of families killed in recent strikes on a Gaza refugee camp.

Netanyahu, in an op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal, reaffirmed his commitment to these objectives, emphasizing the need for demilitarization and the establishment of a temporary security zone around Gaza. He declared that Israel will maintain overriding security responsibility over Gaza for the foreseeable future.

During a visit to Gaza, Netanyahu stated that the conflict would intensify in the coming days, dismissing calls for a ceasefire. The war erupted after Palestinian militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, leading to a significant loss of life on both sides.

The Israeli military campaign, including airstrikes and a siege, has resulted in a substantial number of casualties, with thousands of Gazans displaced. The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, marked by shortages of essential resources, has prompted calls for a humanitarian ceasefire.

Despite international criticism, Netanyahu proposed supporting the voluntary migration of civilians out of Gaza. However, Hamas rejected this plan, asserting that Palestinians refuse deportation and displacement.

In a parliamentary session, Netanyahu addressed the issue of hostages in Gaza, facing protests from families awaiting their loved ones’ return. The conflict’s regional impact increased as Iran reported the death of Razi Moussavi, an adviser, in an Israeli airstrike in Syria. Fears of regional escalation grew with Houthi rebels in Yemen, also backed by Iran, targeting cargo vessels in the Red Sea, prompting the United States to deploy a naval task force.
