The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has expressed the 10th House’s readiness to collaborate with the United Nations in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges. Abbas emphasized the need for better coordination of foreign interventions to maximize limited resources effectively.
During a meeting on Tuesday with the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, and his team in Abuja, Abbas lamented past resource waste due to duplicated programs. He called for a stronger synergy between the Federal Government, sub-nationals, and the National Assembly to ensure optimal project execution.
The Speaker highlighted that projects initiated by the National Assembly at the grassroots level run into billions of naira. He urged the UN and its agencies to engage local stakeholders, including traditional rulers, in project execution for improved outcomes.
Abbas noted, “Insecurity is shifting from the North-East to the North-West. We must tackle this issue with urgency.” He congratulated Fall on his appointment, expressing confidence in his experience and knowledge of Nigeria’s challenges.
Fall, in response, emphasized the UN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria. He stressed that success in Nigeria would positively impact the West African region. He also noted the rising food prices as a concern and sought the Speaker’s continued support in addressing economic challenges.
