Insecurity: Gunmen run riot in Abuja, Enugu, Katsina, Ekiti, 3 others

In the last 48 hours, terrorists, bandits, and criminals of various shades escalated their nefarious activities across the country, unleashing havoc in six states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

These deadly operations spanned five of the six geo-political zones, resulting in at least six casualties, 60 persons kidnapped, the theft of a corpse, and the pilfering of goods valued at millions of naira. Notably, the South-South was the only zone spared from these attacks.

As of the latest information, neither the Force Headquarters nor the Defence Headquarters had responded to inquiries regarding their efforts to address the escalating insecurity in the nation.

Kidnappers Raise Ransom to N700m, Kill 3 in Abuja: In Abuja, kidnappers who abducted ten individuals from Sagwari Layout, Dutse, on January 7, reportedly killed three victims as a warning to their relatives negotiating the ransom. The bandits raised their initial demand from N60 million per person to N100 million, totaling N700 million. A planned protest against perceived government inaction has been postponed.

Bandits Abduct 36 Women in Zamfara: In Zamfara State, bandits abducted 36 women in Magizawa community, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area. Local vigilantes and security personnel were overwhelmed during the invasion, resulting in three deaths, including a vigilante leader.

Bandits Raid Military Camp in Katsina: Armed bandits attacked a joint military camp in Nahuta village, Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State, setting vehicles ablaze and looting valuables. Although the soldiers managed to repel the assault, the bandits inflicted significant damage on Nahuta town, looting properties and causing distress among residents.

Mother and Son Abducted in Zaria: In Kaduna State, a mother, Halimatu Sa’adiya Bello, and her 17-year-old son, Yusuf Bello, were abducted in Dogarawa area, Sabon Gari LGA. The bandits, armed with sophisticated weapons, attacked the residence, injuring one individual and leaving two tenants tied up but unharmed.

Varsity Lecturer Kidnapped in Kebbi: Gunmen kidnapped Dr. Musa Sale Argungu, a deputy dean and lecturer at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology Aliero. The lecturer was forcibly taken at gunpoint and remains missing.

Abduction in Enugu State: In Adani, Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu State, a former councillor, Mr. Romanus Chikwelu, and three others were abducted. The Nigerian Army engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, resulting in casualties, and a stray bullet injured a road user. The kidnappers are demanding a ransom of N25 million.

Hoodlums Invade EKSUTH in Ekiti State: Suspected hoodlums invaded Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, attacking doctors on duty, destroying facilities, and stealing a corpse. In response, the Association of Resident Doctors declared an indefinite strike.

Search and Rescue Operation for Abducted Abuja Girls: The FCT Police Command, in response to public outcry over the abduction of six sisters and their father, has deployed Anti-Kidnapping and Counter-Terrorism squads, along with elements of the Nigerian Army, on a search and rescue mission. The operation is targeting forest areas and remote enclaves in Bwari Area Council.

First Lady Mourns and Urges Improved Security: Senator Oluremi Tinubu mourned the death of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, a 400-level student at Ahmadu Bello University, and urged intensified prayers for the safe return of other kidnapped girls. She called on security agencies to address the increasing insecurity.

Atiku Highlights Poverty as Insecurity Catalyst: Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar lamented that rising poverty and hunger are fueling insecurity in Nigeria. He called on the government to urgently address the dire security situation and regain the trust of the people.

Governor Uba Sani Seeks Time Frame to End Terrorism: Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State reiterated the need for a time frame to end the battle against banditry and terrorism. He expressed confidence in the armed forces’ ability to overcome challenges and restore peace.

The nation grapples with a multifaceted security crisis, requiring urgent and comprehensive measures to protect lives and property.
