Immigration Suspends Officer for Soliciting Money from Traveller at Airport

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended an officer who was caught soliciting money from a traveler at an airport. This action follows a viral video that surfaced online, capturing the officer in the act.

The NIS, in a statement released shortly after the incident, emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and misconduct among its personnel. The service confirmed that the officer involved has been placed on immediate suspension pending further investigation.

The NIS reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism in all its operations, assuring the public that appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against any officer found engaging in corrupt practices. The service also encouraged travelers to report any instances of misconduct, promising swift action to address such issues.

She strongly condemned the alleged misconduct, stating that it undermines the ongoing reforms aimed at improving service standards within the Immigration Service.

She assured the public that the officer has been indefinitely suspended, pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules.

The statement came after the NIS received a video circulating on social media titled “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” which showed an officer soliciting a bribe from a traveler.

“This disgraceful act does not reflect our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy,” she said. “As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures.”

The NIS boss reiterated the agency’s dedication to rooting out corruption within its ranks, in line with its zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior.

She also reaffirmed the NIS’s commitment to excellence in service delivery, aligning with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
