Comedian Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has issued a public apology to Afrobeats artist Davido for a thoughtless joke he made.
AY found himself in the spotlight following the circulation of a video in which he made a disparaging comment about Davido during his recent performance in Warri. In his jest, AY targeted Davido’s multiple relationships with women who have become mothers to his children.
Notably, AY’s recent addition to his own family occurred 13 years after the birth of his first child, Michelle. In the viral video, AY quipped, “Davido, with his modest endowment, continues to impregnate women, whereas I, with my larger endowment from Warri, have not had a child in 13 years.”
The joke failed to resonate with many social media users, who found it offensive and inappropriate. They criticized AY for making personal and potentially hurtful remarks about the popular singer.
In response to the backlash, AY took to his official Instagram account to extend a heartfelt apology to Davido. He expressed his regret for delivering the joke in the manner it was presented in Warri, acknowledging that it was not funny, particularly when compared to its reception during his tours in Canada and the US. AY accepted full responsibility for the poorly executed joke and expressed remorse for how it was misused by the media. In his apology, he stated, “Please know that it is always a learning experience for all of us in the entertainment business. I deserve any backlash coming my way for the joke that was badly delivered. No excuses at all, my Aburo. No reason am. I remain your number one fan, and I love you, @davido.”
