I’m expecting more defections in APC — Tinubu

President Tinubu Anticipates Political Realignments Ahead of 2027 Elections

On Thursday, May 22, President Bola Tinubu noted the likelihood of more politicians joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 general elections approach.

According to his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President made these remarks during the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit, held at the State House Conference Centre. The event was attended by party leaders, members of the National Working Committee, leaders of the National Assembly, and governors from the Progressive Governors’ Forum.

President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the direction of his administration and the APC, stating that remaining with less viable political options may not be appealing to all politicians.

He said: “A one-party system is not ideal for democracy. We are currently leading, in line with national aspirations. People may choose to leave political formations they no longer find favorable. I am satisfied with where we stand and anticipate further alignments. That is how politics unfolds.”

He also emphasized the constitutional rights of Nigerians to associate with any political group of their choice.

“I appreciate the contributions of everyone involved. We are at the midpoint of our term, which began 24 months ago,” he stated.

President Tinubu also acknowledged members of the Federal Executive Council, the National Assembly, and party leadership, noting their roles in advancing the administration’s agenda.

“Our objective has been to address national concerns, restore institutional trust, and support various national efforts,” he said.

He addressed certain policy measures his government has introduced, referring to them as part of a broader agenda.

“Changes have been made in various sectors. Some have had wide-reaching effects. These measures were adopted after careful consideration,” he explained.

He acknowledged that decisions taken since assuming office in May 2023 had presented difficulties, but maintained they were necessary from the government’s standpoint.

“The foreign exchange framework has been adjusted. Additional tax measures are being planned. External investors are engaging with the country,” he added.
