The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the boat mishap that occurred in Kogi state, resulting in the loss of many lives.
The incident happened on November 29, 2024, along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger, with over 160 passengers on board, 24 of whom were rescued, while others remain unaccounted for.
The investigation, led by the Force Marine Officer, aims to identify the contributing factors to the mishap and develop strategies to prevent similar incidents on the nation’s waterways ¹. The probe will also focus on improving safety and emergency response systems for water transport across the country.
IGP Egbetokun has assured the people of Kogi State and Nigerians that the police will work closely with relevant agencies to ensure the swift rescue of missing passengers and provide justice for the victims. The police have activated resources and operational modalities to intensify search and rescue efforts.
Additionally, the IGP has called on waterway operators, boat owners, and stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department to adopt and enforce critical safety measures ¹.
