“I began my professional journey as a DJ,” shared Kcee.

Popular Nigerian artist Kingsley Okonkwo, better known as Kcee, recently shared a surprising revelation about his early career journey during an episode of the Afrobeats Podcast. The ‘Limpopo’ hitmaker disclosed that he initially began his career as a disc jockey alongside his brother and co-founder of Five Star Music, Emeka Okonkwo, also known as E-Money.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Kcee highlighted that his father, who was deeply involved in the music industry as a DJ and record seller, played a significant role in shaping his musical influences. Growing up surrounded by music, Kcee gained familiarity with various old-school artists and their music, as his father sold their records. He reminisced about his early years, recalling how he actively participated in selling records at the age of 5 or 6, thus laying the foundation for his future endeavors in the music industry.

“In my secondary school days, I was already managing a bustling record store while also DJing at parties alongside E-Money. This exposed me to a diverse range of artists, shaping my musical tastes.

I credit my father for molding my music career.

The key to my enduring success in the music industry, I believe, lies in my ability to recognize a hit song.”
