The 2023 Best of Nollywood Awards left a lasting impression on attendees, with vivid memories lingering long after the event concluded. Hosted by Nollywood actor Kunle Remi, the 15th awards ceremony took place on Friday, December 22, at the Adolak Event Centre in Oshogbo, Osun State.
Two standout films, Chinenye Nworah’s ‘Shanty Town’ and Tunde Aina’s ‘Underbelly,’ emerged as frontrunners, securing the highest number of awards during the night. In total, 29 awards were bestowed upon film practitioners, with two special recognition awards presented to industry veterans Adebayo Salami (Oga Bello) and Chief Toyin Adegbola (Asewo to re Mecca) by Governor Ademola Adeleke, much to the delight of those in attendance.
Nworah’s ‘Shanty Town’ and Aina’s ‘Underbelly’ emerged as the night’s big winners, each clinching five awards. ‘Shanty Town’ received accolades for Best Use Of Make Up, Best Actress In A Supporting Role (English), Best Actress In An English Movie, Best Actor in an English Movie, and Movie of the Year. On the other hand, ‘Underbelly’ secured awards for Best Use of Special Effect, Production Design, Most Promising Actor, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (English), and Director of the Year.
Other notable winners included ‘Ifedichie,’ ‘Obara’m,’ Mustapha Solagbade, Debbie Sokoya, Funso Adeolu, Jumoke Odetola, and Princess Kossy Nwogu. The event also drew the presence of state commissioners, Chief Dele Momodu, Nobert Young, Yemi Blaq, Keppy Ekpeyong Bassey, Segun Arinze, Fred Amata, Kemi Adekomi, Damilola Oni, and Abiola Atanda (Madam Kofo).
The after-party stole the spotlight with Governor Adeleke’s electrifying performance. Affectionately known as the “dancing governor,” he showcased impressive dance moves and even mimicked songs by his nephews, Davido and Sina Rambo. Taking center stage with the microphone, he acted as the hype man, captivating the audience.
In his speech, Governor Adeleke expressed his passion for the entertainment and arts industry, highlighting the involvement of his son and nephew in the field. He pledged ongoing support from the state government and encouraged filmmakers to leverage the opportunities in Osun State.
Seun Oloketuyi, founder and CEO of BON Awards, spoke at the event, describing bringing the awards to Osun State as a masterstroke. In an exclusive interview, he revealed that the pan-Nigeria awards would head to Enugu State for the 16th edition.
