Renowned AI Expert Yoshua Bengio Raises Alarm Over Rapid AI Development
A frantic race among tech giants to develop ever-more powerful AI systems could have dangerous consequences, warns leading AI researcher Yoshua Bengio. Speaking at the Paris Global AI Summit, Bengio unveiled the first-ever International AI Safety Report, cautioning against the potential loss of control over artificial intelligence.
AI Risks: From Fake Content to Cyber and Biological Attacks
Bengio, a Turing Prize-winning computer scientist, highlighted risks that are already widely acknowledged, such as AI’s role in generating misleading content. However, he warned that emerging threats—such as AI-driven cyberattacks and biological warfare—are becoming more apparent.
“Proof is steadily appearing of additional risks, like biological attacks or cyberattacks,” he cautioned.
Worse still, he fears that in the long term, humans could lose control over AI systems that develop their own will to survive.
China’s AI Surge Fuels Safety Concerns 🚀🇨🇳
The release of China’s DeepSeek AI model, a low-cost, high-performance system, has accelerated global competition, posing additional risks. Bengio believes this AI arms race is making safety concerns even more urgent.
“Without government intervention, I don’t know how we’re going to get through this,” he warned.
Despite AI’s potential dangers, safety research remains underfunded, making up only a small fraction of the vast investments in AI development.
Are Governments Failing to Regulate AI?
Bengio stressed the need for stronger international regulation, but political shifts have stalled progress. While the United States once led AI policy under Joe Biden, efforts have weakened since Donald Trump’s inauguration.
At the Paris summit, Bengio compared the AI Safety Report to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), highlighting AI’s potential impact on humanity’s future.
“What scares me the most is the possibility that humanity could disappear within 10 years. It’s terrifying. I don’t know why more people don’t realize it.”
What’s Next? The Call for AI Safety Regulation
With 100 experts from 30 countries, the UN, the EU, and the OECD contributing to the report, Bengio’s warning is clear: without urgent regulation, AI could pose an existential threat.
