Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, didn’t mince his words when critiquing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya for his costly mistake, which handed Chelsea their second goal in the recent Premier League showdown.
The Blues had initially taken the lead through a Cole Palmer penalty, but Raya’s lapse in judgment allowed Mudryk’s wayward cross to loop over him and into the net.
Neville didn’t hold back in his assessment: “Raya’s positioning is simply not up to par. He’s positioned far too forward, which is unacceptable for an Arsenal goalkeeper. That ball should never have ended up in the back of the net.”
He went on to explain the situation further, saying, “Mudryk’s intention was to provide a cross for Raheem Sterling, not to chip the goalkeeper. The fact that he could chip Raya is a clear sign of his poor positioning. Raya was positioned too far ahead, perhaps a yard beyond where he should have been. He was even beyond the near post, and that’s just not the right place for a goalkeeper.”
Neville shared his views on Sky Sports, and it’s evident that he found Raya’s mistake inexcusable. However, the match ended with goals from Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard, ultimately securing a point for the Gunners.
