Gakpo’s Double Helps Liverpool Rout Ipswich, Arsenal Overcome Red Card Drama to Edge Past Wolves

Cody Gakpo shone with a brace as Premier League leaders Liverpool cruised to a 4-1 victory over Ipswich, maintaining their six-point advantage over Arsenal, who fought hard despite a controversial red card to Myles Lewis-Skelly, securing a narrow 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday.

At Anfield, Liverpool powered to their second successive league win, sparked by a first-half goal spree. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the 11th minute, firing past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton after an assist from Ibrahima Konate.

Mohamed Salah extended the lead in the 35th minute with a fierce strike, his 23rd goal in all competitions this season and his 100th Premier League goal at Anfield. Gakpo further sealed the deal before halftime, bundling home a parried shot from Szoboszlai in the 44th minute.

Gakpo added a second in the 66th minute, heading in from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s perfect cross. Ipswich’s Jacob Greaves scored a consolation goal in stoppage time, but Liverpool’s commanding performance ensured they remained on course for their first English title since 2020.

With 16 wins from 22 league games, Liverpool’s quest for a quadruple continues, and they hold a game in hand over second-placed Arsenal.

In a thrilling encounter at Wolves, Arsenal struggled with 10 men after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card for a foul on Matt Doherty just before halftime. Although the tackle was seen as cynical, many believed the red was too harsh, especially given its distance from goal. However, the Gunners were also reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute when Joao Gomes earned a second booking for a foul on Jurrien Timber.

In a dramatic twist, Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori scored the winning goal in the 74th minute, a half-volley that went in off the far post, ensuring all three points for Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Dango Ouattara’s hat-trick helped Bournemouth extend their unbeaten run to 11 games, crushing Nottingham Forest 5-0 at the Vitality Stadium. The win sees Bournemouth rise to sixth place, ending Forest’s eight-match unbeaten streak. Justin Kluivert, Antoine Semenyo, and Ouattara all scored in a dominant performance.

Newcastle climbed into fourth place after a 3-1 victory at bottom-dwelling Southampton. Alexander Isak was instrumental, scoring a brace, while Sandro Tonali added another to seal the win.

Everton’s 1-0 victory at Brighton marked a significant milestone for manager David Moyes, who became only the third manager in Premier League history to reach 700 games. A 42nd-minute penalty converted by Iliman Ndiaye was enough to secure all three points for the Toffees.

In other news, Manchester City will host Chelsea in a late-game showdown, with Pep Guardiola’s men hoping for a victory to move into the top four.
