Fubara Donates Residential Quarters to NAF, Says Government’s Support is Not Only for Allies

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has explained that the residential building constructed by the state government for officers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) was intended to complement the efforts of the military and the federal government in providing welfare support to servicemen.

Governor Fubara made this statement during the inauguration of two blocks of 12 flats each, comprising two-bedroom NAF prototype residential buildings at the Port Harcourt NAF Base in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Monday. He noted that the housing facility, which began in 2017, was initially valued at N212 million but was later revised to N454 million. This revision, he explained, demonstrated a modest contribution to the welfare of Air Force personnel, recognizing the ongoing collaboration in the fight against crime and criminality.

“This project, which was not initiated by our administration, was conceived in 2017 but left incomplete. Upon taking office, we were approached, and understanding the importance of officers’ welfare, we decided to complete it. We felt that N454 million was a small price to pay for the crucial support we receive from the Nigerian Air Force,” Governor Fubara remarked.

The governor stressed that the state’s support should not be limited to electorates or specific communities but should also extend to institutions that play a vital role in protecting lives and property. “The welfare of officers is key. When they are comfortable, they will perform effectively, contributing to their productivity and the safety of the state,” he added.

Governor Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting all security agencies in the state, particularly in the fight against oil theft and pipeline vandalism. “Our support is not only for those who voted for us but also for the agencies that protect our lives and properties,” he stated.

Additionally, Fubara promised to enhance the 115 Special Operations Group Base of the NAF, aiming to make it one of the most attractive bases in the country. He assured that requests made by the base were being addressed in line with his administration’s commitment to effective governance.

The Chief of Air Staff of Nigeria, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, praised the project as a demonstration of the Rivers State Government’s commitment to the welfare of NAF personnel. He noted that the facility would boost morale, improve the quality of life for NAF families, and contribute to the operational effectiveness of the force. He also commended the strong partnership between the NAF and the Rivers State Government, which has played a key role in securing the state’s economic lifeline through operations against illegal oil bunkering.

Air Marshal Abubakar further highlighted that the NAF had reciprocated the state’s support by providing air operations and services free of charge, ensuring a secure environment for businesses to thrive.

In his welcome address, Air Commodore Ali H. Idris, Commander of the 115 Special Operations Group, NAF Base Port Harcourt, described the housing facility as a testament to Governor Fubara’s leadership and dedication to improving the welfare of NAF personnel. He emphasized that the project would enhance operational readiness and strengthen the partnership between the NAF and the Rivers State Government in the fight against crime.
