Former Military President Ibrahim Babangida has rejected a post endorsing military rule, affirming that democracy is firmly established and here to stay.

Former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida has distanced himself from a social media post suggesting he supports military rule over democracy.

In a statement released by his media office and signed by Mahmud Abdullahi in Minna, General Babangida clarified that the account on X that shared the post is a parody and not his official account.

The statement emphasized Babangida’s commitment to democratic governance, stating: “This misleading account uses our principal’s image, name, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s coat of arms for deceptive purposes. This account does not belong to him, and the former President does not endorse any content from it.”

The statement further asserted: “To be clear, General Babangida (rtd) is a strong supporter of Nigeria’s democracy, which he believes is robust and enduring. He advocates for the preservation of the democratic process and believes that despite current challenges, Nigeria will emerge stronger and more progressive. As he has previously stated, the key to solving our problems is ‘more’ democracy, not less.”

General Babangida also expressed pride in the Nigerian military’s unwavering support for civilian governments since 1999, marking the longest period of civilian rule in Nigeria’s history.
