Footballer Mary Earps wins the BBC Sport Personality of the Year award

Mary Earps, the accomplished goalkeeper for both England and Manchester United, clinched the coveted title of the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year for 2023.

Expressing her gratitude, Earps shared her disbelief and appreciation for the incredible journey she has experienced over the past couple of years. She emphasized the profound sense of fulfillment in realizing her wildest dreams, acknowledging the opportunity bestowed upon her. In a moment of light-hearted reflection, she humorously mentioned the challenges of walking to the stage in her dress and heels.

At the age of 30, Earps faced a setback when she was dropped from the Lionesses in 2019, contemplating international retirement. This adversity, however, became a catalyst for personal growth. Reflecting on her experiences, Earps highlighted the importance of resilience and character in navigating life’s challenges. She sees football not just as a sport but as a vehicle through which individuals can make a positive impact on the world, aiming to contribute in her own small way.

Mary Earps played a pivotal role in the Lionesses’ journey to the Women’s World Cup final, earning recognition as the best goalkeeper with Fifa’s Golden Glove award. Despite her remarkable efforts, England fell short in the final, suffering a 1-0 defeat in Sydney. The talented goalkeeper saved a crucial penalty from Spain’s Jenni Hermoso during the intense match.

In the BBC Sports Personality of the Year vote, retired England cricketer Stuart Broad secured the second position, followed by world heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson in third place. Other notable sports luminaries on the shortlist included wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett, jockey Frankie Dettori, and golf star Rory McIlroy.

Mary Earps’ victory marked the third consecutive year of a female athlete receiving the prestigious award, following Emma Raducanu in 2021 and Earps’ England teammate Beth Mead in the previous year. In the preceding season, Earps showcased her goalkeeping prowess by keeping 14 clean sheets as Manchester United claimed the runner-up spot in the Women’s Super League.
