Five Dead, Others Hospitalized After Church Feast in Ibadan
Five people have lost their lives, and others are receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Center in Ibadan, following a church feast known as “ipese.” The incident occurred last Sunday at a white-garment church in the city.
While approximately 50 individuals have been discharged from the hospital, the cause of the deaths remains under investigation. The feast, a traditional part of the church’s doctrine, involved consuming prepared beans.
A church source clarified that it’s not yet medically confirmed whether the feast was directly responsible for the deaths. They emphasized that other factors might be involved, and government agencies, including the police, DSS, WHO, and media organizations, are conducting investigations.
A medical staff at the IDC confirmed the incident and stated that 50 victims have been treated and discharged. The state health commissioner is expected to provide an update on the situation next week.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
