The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to harnessing technology as a key tool for driving economic growth and addressing Nigeria’s escalating youth unemployment. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, made this declaration during his keynote address at the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) Summit 1.0 in Ibadan. The summit, titled “The Rain of Transformation Is Upon Us: CEOs Arise,” highlighted the role of technology in shaping Nigeria’s future.
Dr. Tijani emphasized that the government fully recognizes the demographic realities of the nation, with a population of over 235 million and a forecast of half a billion by 2050. He also pointed out that Nigeria’s youth, with an average age of 16.9 years, face a growing challenge of unemployment, which requires immediate and innovative solutions. He assured that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to providing a strong foundation for economic growth through technology.
While acknowledging the government’s role in creating infrastructure, Dr. Tijani stressed that Nigeria’s future prosperity depends on collective efforts beyond the government. He highlighted the importance of continuous investment in technology, noting that no nation can develop without it.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, represented by Mr. Bayo Akande, the Special Assistant on ICT, also pledged his administration’s support for technological innovations. He emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment for tech-driven initiatives and ensuring that the right policies are in place to foster entrepreneurship and innovation. His government is focused on equipping young Nigerians with the necessary skills for the future job market.
Dr. Olusola Ayoola, the convener of the summit, underscored the transformative power of technology, calling for collaboration among stakeholders to leverage it for national development. He encouraged all participants to work together in turning technological challenges into opportunities for the youth.
