ASUU Threatens Another Strike, Ministry Assures of Preventive Measures
The Ministry of Education is working diligently to avert a potential strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). In a statement released on Sunday, the ministry’s spokesperson, Folasade Biriowo, assured that measures are in place to address the union’s concerns and prevent a disruption to academic activities.
ASUU had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government last week, demanding the resolution of several outstanding issues, including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, payment of withheld salaries, and addressing concerns related to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The union also called for increased funding for public universities, the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and the implementation of various reforms to improve the university system.
Despite the ministry’s assurances, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke expressed concerns about the government’s lack of progress in addressing these issues. He warned that if the government fails to act within the given timeframe, the union would be forced to take industrial action.
