The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to cease the operations of tricycles, commonly known as Keke Napep, in specific areas of Abuja. Wike assured that the issue of “one-chance” incidents would soon be eradicated in the capital, with a specific focus on eliminating Keke Napep operations in Asokoro and Maitama.
Wike disclosed that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) would soon introduce buses and taxis to address transportation challenges and curb criminal activities associated with one-chance occurrences in the FCT. Emphasizing the need for these alternative modes of transportation, he stated, “These buses and taxis will cover all routes in Asokoro and Maitama. We are phasing out Keke Napep, particularly in these areas, as some of them serve as conduits for criminal elements.”
The former Governor of Rivers State highlighted the potential benefits of the new transportation initiative, stating, “If we have buses, people will prefer commuting from their neighborhoods to work and back.” Addressing Estate Developers and Residents’ Associations in the Federal Capital Territory, Wike urged residents to collaborate with the FCDA by fulfilling their tax obligations. Despite acknowledging the inconvenience, he emphasized the necessity of facing this challenge collectively.
