Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that his decision to retire from Manchester United in 2013 was driven by a desire to spend more time with his wife, Cathy, following the death of her sister.
Ferguson, who managed the club for 27 years, left after an illustrious career that saw him win 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, and numerous other accolades.
While many assumed Ferguson stepped down at the age of 71 due to his age, the former United boss shared the real reason during a conversation on McCoist’s podcast, Ally’s Social Club.
He explained, “Cathy’s sister had passed away the previous October, and she was lost. It became clear during Christmas that she was struggling, and I told her, ‘Look, I’m going to retire at the end of the season.’”
Ferguson further shared, “Her reaction showed relief and happiness. She had devoted her life to supporting me and raising our children because of my career, so I knew it was time to be there for her.”
