Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, has clarified his decision to forego the opportunity to take a penalty in their 3-0 victory over Everton. Despite being the designated penalty taker, Fernandes handed the ball to Marcus Rashford.
The Red Devils had already secured the lead with Alejandro Garnacho’s remarkable goal, and Anthony Martial added a third late in the match. However, the legitimacy of the second goal, a penalty converted by Rashford after VAR ruled that Ashley Young had fouled Martial in the box, raised some eyebrows.
In his explanation to Sky Sports, Fernandes stated, “Because Marcus needed a bit of confidence, he needed his goal. He is an excellent penalty taker. I was sure he could score that penalty, and Marcus did it perfectly.”
Fernandes emphasized the importance of strikers and wingers finding the back of the net, noting, “I think obviously strikers and wingers need to score goals; it is part of their game. Marcus was unstoppable, and he could take on everybody.”
