EPL: Arteta Demands FA Overturn Lewis-Skelly’s Controversial Red Card in Arsenal’s Crucial Win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called on the Football Association (FA) to overturn the contentious red card shown to Myles Lewis-Skelly during Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday.

The 18-year-old defender made Premier League history as one of its youngest players to be sent off after a controversial decision by referee Michael Oliver in the first half. The red card was issued for a challenge on Matt Doherty deep inside Arsenal’s half, which many deemed harsh and undeserved.

⚖️ Arteta Questions Fairness of Decision

The decision sparked widespread outrage, with former England captain Alan Shearer labeling it:

“One of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time.”

Arteta echoed the sentiment, urging the FA to reverse the ruling, pointing to a precedent set earlier in the season when Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes had a red card rescinded.

“I am absolutely fuming, but I leave it with you,” Arteta said. “Hopefully, the right thing will happen. If we have to appeal, there’s already a really good precedent with Bruno this season.”

🏆 Resilience Amid Adversity

Despite being down to 10 men, Arsenal showed grit and determination. The match turned in the second half when Riccardo Calafiori scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute. Wolves were also reduced to 10 men after Joao Gomes was sent off, leveling the playing field.

Arteta praised his players for their resilience:

“I’m extremely proud. The courage, spirit, and intelligence they showed to manage the game emotionally were unbelievable. They went out there determined to win, and they delivered in a convincing way.”

🔥 Arsenal’s Title Hopes Alive

The victory keeps Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes alive as they trail Liverpool by six points, having played one more game. Arteta emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum:

“We’re in a tough position, but we’ll fight to be where we should be in the coming weeks.”
