Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Enugu State following the tragic tanker explosion that claimed lives along the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The fuel tanker veered off course on Saturday, January 25, 2025, and burst into flames, causing fatalities and injuries in its wake.
A Call for Action
Reacting to the incident, Vice President Shettima stressed the urgent need to prevent avoidable tanker accidents and explosions across Nigeria.
In his condolence message, the Vice President conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s deep concern over the frequency of such incidents. He said:
“It was with a heart full of sadness that I received news of the fuel tanker explosion in Ugwu Onyeama. I am deeply saddened that another tanker accident has led to the loss of lives, leaving others injured in such a tragic manner.”
The Vice President reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the issue, adding:
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seriously worried by the recurring tanker explosions on public roads and residential areas—incidents that are ordinarily avoidable. He has directed relevant agencies to take immediate action to ensure that these tragedies become a thing of the past.”
Condolences and Support
In his statement, issued by spokesman Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima expressed solidarity with the affected families and reassured Nigerians of the government’s determination to prevent future occurrences.
“I want to reassure Nigerians that the government will stop at nothing to put an end to tanker accidents on our roads.”
