The Enugu State Government has taken decisive action by shutting down several schools in the capital due to their alleged illegal and substandard operations.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, announced this during the government’s push to enhance the quality of education in the state. The move aims to eliminate poor educational standards and address skill gaps among students.
Some of the schools affected by this crackdown include Evangel School, Ivory Education Centre on Owerri Road, Asata, and Eastview Nursery and Primary School in Railway Quarters, Njemanze. Other schools, like St. Michael Nursery and Primary School, St. Bartholomew Nursery, Primary, and Secondary School in Asata, and Olive Grove Nursery and Primary Academy in Njemanze, were also sealed.
The Commissioner emphasized that these actions follow the ministry’s earlier directive, which mandated all schools at the Basic and Secondary levels to meet state regulations. Registration and approval by the ministry are now essential for any educational institution to operate.
Shockingly, some of these schools were found operating under dangerous conditions, such as open roofs, cracked walls, and fallen rafters, putting hundreds of students at risk in unsuitable learning environments.
Prof. Mbah stated that the government is committed to raising educational standards, ensuring qualified teachers, proper adherence to the curriculum, and providing a safe, conducive environment for students. He condemned the proliferation of illegal schools where dishonest proprietors exploit parents without delivering quality education.
“Some schools are cramming children into unsafe structures, with unqualified teachers and abysmal learning environments. We gave them a four-month grace period to register or obtain provisional licenses, and now we’re acting to restore the dignity of education,” Mbah explained.
The government’s move reflects its commitment to providing students with access to 21st-century skills, modern workforce knowledge, and a chance to compete with their global peers.
