The Enugu State Government has summoned traditional rulers and community leaders in Nsukka following recent violent attacks by the Oriokpa masqueraders that resulted in two fatalities. The state is launching a comprehensive investigation into the activities of these masquerade groups and is committed to holding the perpetrators accountable.
Deacon Okey Ogbodo, the Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, announced this initiative, emphasizing the government’s zero tolerance for such misconduct. This comes after a history of violence attributed to the Oriokpa masqueraders, including a previous attack on a female nurse in April, which received widespread condemnation.
In response to ongoing violence, hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona protested on September 19, demanding an end to the harassment by masqueraders in their area. Ogbodo highlighted the chaos and injuries caused by the masqueraders’ actions across several communities in the Nsukka Council Area.
A meeting is scheduled for Friday at 1 PM, where traditional rulers and Presidents-General from affected communities—including Nguru, Isiakpu, and others—will discuss these issues. Additionally, Governor Peter Mbah has directed the Commissioner of Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents, including the fatalities, to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.
Ogbodo expressed condolences to the victims’ families and stressed that the government will protect the rights and security of all citizens, particularly women and children. He warned that any further excesses from the Oriokpa masqueraders or similar groups would result in appropriate sanctions from the government.
