Hoodlums in large numbers stormed the Living Faith Church in Daura, Katsina State, looting about 205 chairs, musical instruments, and other valuable items worth millions of naira. The attack occurred amidst the #EndBadGovernance protests on Thursday, which saw violent clashes between hoodlums and security forces.
David Jato, the pastor in charge of the church, detailed the incident, explaining that the hoodlums diverted from the protests to target the church around 10:00 a.m., breaking doors and windows before making off with everything inside, including musical instruments, digital clocks, and even a scoreboard containing church documents. Due to the extensive looting, the church was unable to hold its Sunday service in the auditorium.
Jato mentioned that while the Living Faith Church and the Deeper Life Church were successfully looted, the Anglican Church in the area was spared due to strong iron protectors at its gate. The church leadership has since reported the incident to the police and the Army, with authorities indicating that some arrests had been made.
The attack on the churches has been met with shock and condemnation. The pastor expressed deep concern over the targeting of religious institutions, emphasizing that such actions should be condemned by all. He called on the government to address the grievances of the people and ensure the protection of places of worship.
Rev. Nelson Onyekachukwu, the former state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), also condemned the attacks, urging the government to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. Another church, Power of Resurrection, was also affected, with its windows vandalized by hoodlums, though they were unable to enter due to the church’s iron protectors.
As of now, the Police Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Abubakar, has not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
