End of Free Funds Era: Reps Urge Universities to Use Resources Wisely

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has emphasized the importance of prudent utilization of both human and material resources to the Vice Chancellors and management of Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, and Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

This directive was issued by the Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, following a weekend visit to both institutions.

Fulata stressed that the goals of establishing these universities cannot be met without the effective and efficient use of limited resources. He stated that the legislators conducted an oversight visit to the newly established universities to caution against the misuse of unapproved funds.

He highlighted that, unlike revenue-generating agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service and the Federal Inland Revenue Service, universities must not spend internally generated funds without proper appropriation, as this would constitute a violation of the law. According to Fulata, the power of appropriation lies solely with the National Assembly.

Victor Afam Ogene, another committee member, underscored the importance of prioritizing the welfare and security of students. He criticized any Vice Chancellor who is unaware of the number of students residing in hostels versus those living off-campus.

In response to the committee’s oversight visit, Prof. Shehu Abdulrahaman, Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Lafia, praised the lawmakers for their initiative. He acknowledged that the visit shed light on several areas that could improve the university’s operations.

Similarly, Prof. Innocent Ujah, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, expressed gratitude to the committee for their oversight. He requested the committee’s support to enhance the quality of services at the university. Prof. Ujah assured that the university’s management is committed to maintaining professionalism in accordance with the codes and ethics of various medical bodies and international best practices.

Both Vice Chancellors also raised concerns about the increasing electricity bills from the distribution company, calling for immediate intervention from the National Assembly and relevant government bodies to address the issue.
