Emirates Resumption: Nigerian Airlines Set to Begin Direct Flights to the UAE

Ahead of the resumption of Emirates Airlines’ flight operations to Nigeria next Tuesday, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has successfully negotiated an agreement on reciprocal rights. This deal will enable Nigerian airlines to begin direct flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A statement by Tunde Moshood, Keyamo’s Special Assistant on Media and Communications, noted that the minister, along with a delegation, traveled to the UAE to finalize discussions regarding Emirates’ return to Nigerian airspace. The meeting also laid the groundwork for a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between both countries.

Moshood emphasized that this agreement would enhance cooperation and provide a framework for the evolving relationship between Nigeria and the UAE. The statement reads: “The Honourable Minister, alongside his technical team, held constructive talks with UAE aviation officials to ensure the smooth reintegration of Emirates Airlines into Nigeria next Tuesday. A key element of the discussions was the new BASA, which is set to strengthen cooperation and outline guidelines for both nations in the aviation sector.”

A major outcome of the negotiations was securing reciprocal rights, allowing Nigerian airlines to launch direct flights to the UAE. This breakthrough represents a significant step for Nigeria’s aviation industry, boosting international connectivity and providing more travel options between the two countries.

Reflecting on the discussions, Festus Keyamo remarked: “Today’s talks reaffirm our dedication to building a balanced and forward-thinking partnership with the UAE. We are proud to have secured reciprocal rights for Nigerian airlines, a move that will not only deepen our bilateral ties but also enhance the global competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation sector. As Emirates returns to Nigeria, we anticipate a prosperous and mutually beneficial air service relationship.”

This agreement follows weeks of diplomatic and technical consultations aimed at restoring direct flights between Nigeria and the UAE. The Federal Government’s efforts to ensure positive outcomes for both Nigerian and international travelers have been clear throughout this process. Emirates’ resumption and the new BASA are expected to significantly promote tourism, business, and cultural exchange between the two nations, driving economic growth.
