Kano Emir Condemns Domestic Violence, Urges Daughters to Fight Back
Kano, Nigeria – The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has strongly condemned domestic violence. He has instructed his daughters to defend themselves if their husbands ever strike them.
Speaking at the National Dialogue Conference on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Sanusi expressed deep concern over the prevalence of domestic violence, particularly in Kano. He cited alarming statistics from Shariah courts, revealing a high number of cases involving severe physical abuse of women.
The Emir emphasized that Islam strictly prohibits any form of domestic violence, including beating. He urged men to treat women with respect and dignity, and he encouraged women to resist abuse.
The conference, organized by Bayero University Kano and the Development Research and Projects Centre, aimed to promote the prevention of GBV through Islamic teachings. Participants discussed the role of religious leaders in challenging harmful cultural norms and advocating for women’s rights.
