The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Wednesday, September 25, that tactical units and intelligence teams will remain in Edo State to enhance security measures.
Egbetokun emphasized that this decision aims to ensure stability and public safety across the state until further notice. He praised the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their outstanding professionalism during the recent Edo State governorship elections, noting that the peaceful nature of the elections reflects the dedication and hard work of the security forces.
He specifically acknowledged the discipline and neutrality demonstrated by security personnel throughout the electoral process, commending their commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and safeguarding the democratic process.
In a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun also recognized the courage, maturity, and resilience of the Edo State citizens, urging them to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant now that the elections have concluded peacefully.
The IGP assured the public of the Nigeria Police’s ongoing dedication to their safety and security. Adejobi noted that individuals arrested for electoral offenses would be prosecuted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while those charged with other crimes would face court proceedings after investigations.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting democracy and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in Nigeria. We will continue to strive for excellence in our duties, upholding the principles of fairness, justice, and accountability,” he stated.
Additionally, the IGP expressed condolences to the Kano State Command and the families of five policemen who tragically lost their lives in a motor accident on Tuesday in Karfi village, Kura Local Government Area, while returning to Kano after election duties. He offered prayers for their souls.
