Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, has revealed that his departure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was made with the full awareness and approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Vanguard, El-Rufai announced his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday. Speaking with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, he disclosed that he had consulted Buhari before making the decision, emphasizing that he frequently sought the former president’s advice on political matters.
“There are certain individuals I always consult before making any major decision, and I never go against their counsel. Former President Muhammadu Buhari is one of them,” El-Rufai stated.
He further explained, “Before leaving the APC, I met with Buhari on a Friday and informed him of my decision. I rarely make significant political moves without his input. I asked for his prayers and blessings, which he graciously gave.”
Reflecting on his time as Kaduna State governor, El-Rufai recalled how he sought Buhari’s approval for key appointments, including reviewing his commissioner nominees.
“Even when I was selecting commissioners for Kaduna State, I presented the list to Buhari to ensure none had ever insulted him,” he recounted. “He laughed, thanked me, and told me to proceed with the appointments.”
