The Edo State Government has sounded the alarm over an alleged plan by the reinstated Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, to forcibly enter the State’s Government House on September 30th.
Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media Projects, revealed that Shaibu intends to enforce his reinstatement despite a pending stay of execution appeal challenging Justice J.K. Omotosho’s ruling in favor of the embattled deputy governor.
In a statement issued late Saturday, Osagie called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene and stop Shaibu from executing his plan, warning that such an action could trigger unrest in the state.
“We want to alert the Inspector General of Police to intelligence reports we’ve received indicating a plot by the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to forcefully enter the Edo State Government House under the guise of enforcing the ruling of Justice J.K. Omotosho,” Osagie said.
He further explained that while the stay of execution is still under review by the Court of Appeal, the state must not be plunged into chaos over one person’s ambitions. Osagie also pointed out that a similar incident involving Shaibu previously resulted in the tragic death of a police officer, adding, “We believe that one death is too many, and it is in everyone’s best interest to prevent a recurrence.”
The ongoing clash between Shaibu and Governor Obaseki led to Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly, with Marvelous Omobayo subsequently appointed as the new deputy governor. However, a Federal High Court in Abuja recently ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement, deepening the political tension.
