In the aftermath of the recently concluded Edo State governorship election, Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata has revealed a shocking truth—some members of his party sold their votes to rival parties. 😲
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the winner on Sunday, with APC’s Monday Okpebholo emerging victorious, securing 291,667 votes. He beat the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes. Akpata, however, came in third with 22,763 votes.
In an interview on Channels TV, Akpata didn’t shy away from acknowledging his defeat. He expressed his disappointment, stating that the issue wasn’t just the opposition, but also within his own party. “Poverty led to a number of my supporters and even Labour Party members selling their votes,” he lamented.
Calling the situation a “tragedy,” Akpata explained that many of his supporters either stayed home or were swayed by cash offers from rival political parties. He highlighted this as one of the biggest lessons he learned, stressing the need to reevaluate trust in people.
“Members of my party went for cash,” he said. “If you think you know the people, you have to think again and look inward. It’s a painful but important lesson.”
