National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu stated during the ongoing All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC), 2023 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, that kidnapping has supplanted armed robbery in Nigeria. He attributed this shift to the decreasing prevalence of cash transactions, making individuals less attractive targets for traditional robbery. Ribadu highlighted the concerning persistence of Boko Haram, Banditry, Niger Delta, and South East unrest, emphasizing the gravity of these security challenges. He acknowledged the efforts to address kidnapping issues, particularly under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Ribadu expressed the intention of the government to promote transparency and sought the support of the media in dealing with the nation’s security concerns. Despite these efforts, the issue of insecurity persisted, with reports of the abduction of the District Head of Kujama and others in Kaduna State, as well as the tragic killing of a pastor after a ransom payment. Additionally, the Nigeria Medical Association in Enugu State threatened a strike over the kidnapping of ten doctors.
In response to the escalating security situation, the Senate summoned key security figures, including the National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff, Inspector General of Police, and heads of intelligence agencies, to address the urgent need for improved coordination and synergy among security forces. The motion, sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar ’Adua, emphasized the necessity of collaboration to combat insurgency and emerging security threats. Senators underscored the importance of enhancing inter-operational synergy and coordination among military and paramilitary agencies to effectively tackle various forms of insecurity facing the nation.
