Delta Obedient Elders’ Council: Tinubu’s Insensitive Speech Reveals Disconnect from Nigeria’s Reality

The Delta Obedient Elders’ Council has criticized President Bola Tinubu for what they describe as an “insensitive speech” addressing Nigerians amid ongoing protests. They argue that the President’s response reflects a disconnect from the harsh realities faced by the country.

In a statement issued by Chairman Chris Biose and Secretary Solomon Akeni, the Council urged the President to move beyond “grandstanding” and tackle the real issues affecting the populace. They expressed regret over the escalation of the civil protests into violence, looting, and property destruction in some regions.

The statement read: “While the President acknowledged the severe suffering of the masses, he failed to offer new policy measures to address the protesters’ demands. It is particularly shocking that President Tinubu did not address the ongoing and horrific killings of farmers by armed Fulani herdsmen, a critical issue impacting local food production.”

The Council also criticized the administration for a perceived lack of accountability and frivolous spending, pointing out that many Nigerians are suffering from severe hunger. They highlighted the absence of mention regarding oil theft and police brutality in the President’s address.

The statement continued: “The President’s failure to address these pressing issues and his insensitive remarks at such a critical moment suggest he is out of touch with the country’s realities. This also indicates he may be surrounded by the wrong advisors.”

They concluded that the systemic issues causing rising poverty in Nigeria require fundamental reforms, which the President’s speech seemed to avoid. The Council emphasized the need for continued efforts by patriots to build a just and equitable society.
