Music streaming giant Deezer has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly reshaping the music industry. According to the Paris-based platform, 10% of tracks uploaded daily are generated by AI—equating to around 10,000 songs.
AI’s Growing Presence in Music
Deezer’s fraud detection system, launched in 2023, has successfully identified AI-generated tracks, many of which are either noise or mimic popular songs. These tracks are often uploaded by fraudulent accounts aiming to exploit the platform’s remuneration model.
“Artificial intelligence is continuing to disrupt the music ecosystem more and more,” stated Deezer’s CEO, Alexis Lanternier.
Some AI tracks even clone the voices of famous artists, bypassing copyright laws. This trend has raised concerns about fairness in royalties and the protection of original content.
Deezer’s Strategy Against AI Fraud
To combat this growing issue, Deezer has applied for two patents for its advanced detection technology. The platform is also working on a system to label AI-generated content, ensuring it is excluded from recommended playlists.
By identifying and weeding out fake tracks, Deezer aims to prioritize genuine artists and offer fairer compensation.
A New Remuneration Model
In January, Deezer announced plans to tweak its payment model to better support musicians with a broader listener base but fewer downloads. This move is part of the company’s commitment to creating a fairer and more sustainable music ecosystem.
As AI continues to blur the lines between creativity and automation, Deezer is taking a proactive stance to protect the integrity of music and support real artists.
