ECPAC Disagrees with Minister’s Claim of 40% Improved Power Supply
The Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy Centre (ECPAC) has strongly disputed the Ministry of Power’s claim that over 40% of Nigerians now enjoy up to 20 hours of daily power supply. The assertion, made by Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has been met with skepticism from consumer advocates who argue that the data lacks transparency and accuracy.
Adelabu, in a statement, attributed the progress in electricity supply to various reforms initiated under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He highlighted the increase in installed generation capacity and the signing of the new Electricity Act.
However, ECPAC’s Executive Director, Chief Princewill Okorie, dismissed the minister’s claims as “laughable.” He questioned the credibility of the statistics and suggested that the ministry should establish a consumer protection department to gather accurate data.
Okorie emphasized the need for more robust consumer engagement and real-time data to assess the actual electricity supply situation in Nigeria.
While Adelabu highlighted the ministry’s vision for a stable and reliable electricity supply, consumer advocates remain unconvinced by the government’s claims.
