The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has voiced its apprehension regarding the recent disputes between prominent Northern businessmen, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Abdussamad Rabiu of BUA Company. Additionally, NEF has expressed its disquiet concerning the ongoing feud between the former governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, and his successor, Governor Dauda Lawal.
In a statement issued by its Convener, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, NEF underscored that these conflicts are having adverse effects on the economic and political stability of the Northern region. The statement reads, in part, “The current clashes involving Aliko Dangote and Abdussamad Isiyaku Rabiu over cement prices, as well as the conflicts of interest between Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State and Defense Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle, are exacerbating the challenges faced by the Northern region, particularly in terms of security and the economy.”
In light of these concerns, NEF has called upon the involved leaders to exercise restraint for the greater good of the region. The statement also implores all Northern leaders and stakeholders to step in and facilitate a reconciliation meeting among the concerned parties. This reconciliation is deemed essential, particularly for the two leaders of Zamfara, Lawal and Matawalle, who are urged to exhibit restraint and maturity, fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration in the face of the formidable security challenges in the state.
