Cholera Crisis: 11 Lives Lost in Ebonyi Community – Urgent Action Needed! 🌍

Overview of the Outbreak

A devastating cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, Izzi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, has tragically claimed the lives of 11 individuals. This includes men, women, and children. The outbreak began on Monday, September 23, 2024. Unfortunately, one of the victims was a nursing mother who left behind her 9-month-old baby. 💔

Health Response Efforts

Dr. Moses Ekuma, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, confirmed the outbreak during a rapid response meeting at Iziogo Health Centre. He reported that about 20 individuals are currently receiving treatment, while approximately 9 to 10 deaths have occurred. Dr. Ekuma expressed gratitude to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for approving funds for essential medical supplies.

To combat this crisis, the health authorities established three treatment centers:

  • Iziogo Health Center
  • Sudan Mission
  • Ndibokote village

Dr. Ekuma advised the community, stating, “If you start experiencing symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, rush to any of these emergency treatment centers.”

Contributing Factors

Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, Director of Public Health, explained that the outbreak likely stemmed from a suspected cholera case related to a burial. Additionally, factors like open defecation and poor hygiene contributed to the crisis, as many residents rely on stream water for drinking.

Community Engagement

Elder Stephen Nwankpuma, a community stakeholder, emphasized the importance of quick action. Upon receiving distress calls, he promptly contacted the relevant authorities, which led to rapid intervention.

Mr. Maduabuchi Nwokpuru, a community health worker and owner of God’s Healing Clinic, shared his observations. He noted that affected individuals presented with severe symptoms of stooling and vomiting and that his team worked diligently to save their lives.

Voices from the Community

Some community members expressed frustration over the delayed response from local leaders. They believe that quicker action from grassroots politicians could have lessened the outbreak’s severity.
